Football Star is a Microgaming classic, one of the first slots (and one of the best) to use their now iconic Rolling Reels feature and one that never fails to disappoint. Football Star is a good few years old, but it always seems to rear its head during the World Cup or the start of the football season and it remains one of the best sport themed slots around.

The Rolling Reels feature on Football Star means that the wins can keep stacking up. As soon as you land a winning payline, the symbols lock in place and every non-winning symbol spins. It’s a simple concept that works amazingly well and although it didn’t begin with this slot, it was one of the first to use it well.
Football Star Bonuses and Payouts
There is a bonus round on Football Star that give players a shot at free spins. There is also a random feature where a football comes flying onto the game reels and leaves a wild wherever it lands.
It’s not the most impressive random feature you will encounter and on many occasions it won’t even leave you with a win, but every now and then it lands just in the right place at the right time, and that’s well worth waiting for.
The only frustrating thing about Football Star, and it’s a pretty big frustration, is the size of the wins. Most of the symbols here return tiny wins—laughably tiny. It’s not uncommon to have a 3x or 4x win streak and to get excited, thinking you’re in for a decent win, only to discover that you win about 1/5th of your stake!
Football Star Review: 71/100
To make Rolling Reels work you need to reduce the amounts that the symbols payout. We get that—but we think that Microgaming reduced them a little too much here. It’s a fun slot and it’s a classic, there is no denying that, but it’s not as good as it could or should be, and it’s quite poor when you compare it to some of the more modern Rolling Reels slots out there right now.
